We are seeking to fill a Lecturer position in the Observational Astrophysics research group at Lancaster University. The new group forms part of a strong Astrophysics research division with our well-established Theoretical Particle Cosmology and Space and Planetary Science groups. The group currently consists of three permanent staff members: Prof. Isobel Hook (group leader), Dr. David Sobral and Dr. John Stott plus a research associate and graduate students. There is a possibility of further academic posts in the future.
Lancaster’s Department of Physics was ranked first and equal-first respectively in the 2008 and 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercises (RAE) and was ranked second for its world-leading research publications in the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework (REF). It is seeking to further enhance its scientific standing.
You will be expected to develop world-class research programmes and attract external research funds. The group will be supported where appropriate by University investment in equipment and personnel. It is also expected that you will carry out leadership roles in one or more of the major next generation international projects such as SKA, LSST, 4MOST, ELT, JWST and Euclid.
We are seeking excellent applicants to play a key role in establishing the new group at Lancaster. You should have research interests that complement those of the existing staff members. Applications from those with interests in observational cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, and/or transients are particularly welcome. We also welcome applications from those with experience connecting observations in these areas with relevant theory.
You should have a proven track record of publications in leading scientific journals. Demonstrated success in winning research grant income is desired. Holders of personal research fellowships are encouraged to apply.
This is a permanent position and tenable from 2nd January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
In addition to research activities, you will also be involved with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including the supervision of PhD students. You will also be expected to contribute to academic strategic planning, management and administration as required.
