The Department of History at Lancaster University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Medieval History (1100-1500). This is a full-time indefinite appointment to start 1 September 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. The candidate should have an excellent profile in teaching and research, as well as concrete plans for future projects and outputs. The successful candidate will have experience of undergraduate teaching (preferably including the design and delivery of their own modules) and will be expected to be able to design and teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules and supervise doctoral students. An ability to be able to contribute to one or more of our postgraduate programmes – Masters in History, International and Military History, War and Diplomacy, Digital Humanities, and Regional and Local History – would be an advantage. In addition, the candidate will make a more general contribution to the department’s teaching programme at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, for example by contributing to team-taught modules and supervising dissertations.

You will be expected to have completed their PhD and show evidence that they will have a strong set of publications for the next Research Excellence Framework or its future equivalent. You will also be expected to show a willingness to develop research projects with the potential to attract funding from bodies such as the British Academy, AHRC and ESRC. A strategy for engaging with external stakeholders in ways that will lead to research impact is also desirable. We seek to appoint a candidate who can complement the department’s wide-ranging strengths in research and teaching. Potential collaborations with the department’s research centres and with other areas of Faculty or University expertise will also be desirable.

The Department of History is actively working to diversify its staff body, and we particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and/or Minority Ethnic historians.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be made to the Head of Department, Dr Thomas Mills, e-mail: t.c.mills@lancaster.ac.uk
