This two year postdoctoral post has been created as a result of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Lancaster University’s Department of Chemistry and Compact Instruments Ltd(CI) (http://www.compactinstruments.co.uk).
CI is an innovative small company that specialises in the design and manufacture of high quality speed measurement products. The company offers a wide portfolio of products to provide solutions to measurement needs, and has its own manufacturing capability.
The Department of Chemistry is a newly-formed, growing and research-led department, rated 10th for research quality in REF2014. It has a keen interest in working with local industry to develop innovative research partnerships that deliver technological solutions. Based at Lancaster, it offers modern research facilities supported by experienced academic staff.
As KTP Associate you will be employed by Lancaster University, but will be based at CI, which is located in Bolton. Following on from proof-of-principle work, you will lead this exciting project which aims to design and develop a new range of commercial electrochemical sensors to monitor and control the water quality in both domestic and commercial aquariums. The project aims to deliver the research and development needed to fully understand and model the measurement process with the generation of sensing systems suitable for commercial exploitation. A key element of the work will be prototyping using 3D printing technologies. You will work closely with and be supported by the senior management team at CI and academics from the Department of Chemistry, principally Head of Department, Professor Peter Fielden (Analytical Chemistry), and Dr Nick Evans (Ion sensing molecules).
Ideally for this post you will have a PhD relevant to electrochemical sensors and/or chemical measurement instrumentation. Additional attributes will include a desire to learn about 3D printing prototype development along with good project management and team working skills.
