The ESRC/HEFCE Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) (http://www.researchcghe.org/) is a research centre focused on higher education and its future. Its objectives are to conduct, disseminate and publish basic and applied research in three integrated programmes of work, relating to global, national (UK) and local perspectives on higher education; to develop theory about higher education and methods of inquiry and research; to respond to new issues arising within the frame of the three programmes, and at the interfaces between them; to facilitate broad academic and policy discussion about higher education in the UK and across the world; and to build long-term capacity in UK social science research on higher education.
The Project is concerned with ‘Knowledge, Curriculum and Student Agency’;
Led by Professor Paul Ashwin, working with Professor Jenni Case, University of Cape Town, and Dr Jan McArthur, it is examining students’ experiences of studying Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in the UK and South Africa. It tracks a cohort of students in each of these disciplinary areas across their undergraduate degrees in two UK and two South African universities. The research includes interviews with students and academics, document analysis, observations of taught sessions, and a student survey.
You will be based at Lancaster University and, working closely with the academics in this project you will undertake qualitative and quantitative research. This will include reviewing and critically analysing literature, preparing analytical and summative papers, analysing existing data sets, preparing new data sets (involving liaising with key informants at the research sites, conducting interviews, administering surveys, and sourcing and collating documents), writing up results of research, including their policy implications, in reports and academic publications. You will also contribute to and help organise CGHE public seminars, national meetings, dissemination events and international conferences.
This is a full time fixed term post until September 2020.
