Research Associate in Synthetic Chemistry for Redox Flow Batteries

This 10 month post is part of an EPSRC First Grant aimed at synthesising and studying redox non-innocent ligands as potential mediators in novel redox flow batteries.
Redox flow batteries are a critical technology in the advancement of energy storage and renewable energy support. They are a flexible technology that can be designed to store renewable electricity across the scale of small household to huge grid installations. As a nascent field, redox flow batteries are being studied across a range of chemistries. The state-of-the-art being the all-vanadium flow battery, utilising vanadium salts in acid electrolyte. However, a move towards organic and molecularly engineered mediators has been observed recently, leading to a diverse range of possible chemistries to be studied. This project aims to explore the potential of redox non-innocent ligands and their metal complexes to obtain batteries with considerably higher cell voltages and long-term stability. A key focus will be utilising sustainable and low cost materials to achieve this goal.
This project is supported by EPSRC, and will also be supported in the greater remit of the Centre of Applies Materials for Integrated Energy Systems (CAM-IES) based in Cambridge. This research associate post will join a team of one academic and a PhD student (who will major on the electrochemical side of this research programme). You should have, or expect to have, a PhD in chemistry or chemically-related sciences. Experience of synthetic inorganic chemistry of metal complexes and under inert atmospheres is essential with a background in physical property analysis of metal-organic compounds and investigation of structure/property relationships desirable. Some experience of electrochemistry is also desirable, though not essential.
