This position is based at Upside Energy Ltd’s offices (to be in central Manchester).
KTP is one of the UK's largest recruitment schemes. This two-year post has been created as a result of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Lancaster University’s School of Computing and Communications and Upside Energy Ltd. The School of Computing and Communications (SCC) at Lancaster University is a research-intensive school employing 50 academic staff, over 40 research staff, and over 100 PhD students. SCC is ranked 7th in the UK by 4* and 3* research and 12th by GPA. SCC is based at InfoLab21, a £15m centre of excellence in ICT. InfoLab21 also houses the Knowledge Business Centre (KBC) which fosters local and regional business development, start-up project incubation, and ICT training. Working with KBC will provide an ideal path to commercial exploitation of the project's research outcomes.
Upside Energy provides flexibility to the energy system. It has built a cloud service that uses advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence to orchestrate hundreds of thousands of energy storage and other electrical devices to create a Virtual Energy Store.This enables the grid to manage supply and demand for electricity more effectively, thus enabling wider deployment of renewable energy. Upside’s systems can directly eliminate hundreds of thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gases.The disruption it is introducing into the energy system is helping create a world of cleaner, cheaper energy for everyone.
As KTP Associate you will be employed by Lancaster University, but will be based at Upside Energy’s premises at Salford (likely moving to Central Manchester as of 2018). You will lead this exciting project which will support Upside Energy in designing and implementing a novel cybersecurity framework to be integrated within the Smart Energy Management system that is already developed by Upside.
You will work closely with and be supported by the senior management and software development team at Upside Energy and academics from the School of Computing and Communications, principally Dr. Angelos Marnerides supported by Prof. Utz Roedig.
You will have a MSc or PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with a good understanding of (i) Network Security and (ii) Distributed Systems and good programming skills in order to contribute immediately to the ambitious work plan. Additional attributes will include good project management and team working skills.

You will be encouraged to present papers at national and international conferences.Depending on the candidate’s previous experience, the successful completion of this project will set the basis for the potentially on-going employment within the company partner.
This post is offered on a fixed term contract for 2 years.
