Senior Research Associate: Data Management and Visualisation in Battery Research
£33,518 to £38,832
Wednesday 23 May 2018
To be confirmed
The Energy Storage Group at Lancaster University is looking to employ a senior research associate at the postdoctoral level. You will be working in the framework of the newly established Faraday Institution, specifically, as a member of the “Multi Scale Modelling” (MSM) consortium. The MSM consortium, led by Imperial College, includes 7 academic partners and several industry collaborators.
You will develop a platform for Visualisation and Data Management (VISDAM) as a tool for the MSM consortium. The VISDAM platform has three objectives:
1. To support and promote collaboration within the MSM consortium. You will design metadata structures and user interfaces to facilitate seam- and frictionless sharing of modelling and experimental data. Those will bridge gaps between modelling techniques and scales and will yield efficient experiment-model validation loops.
2. To visualise findings from complex modelling and experimental approaches and the underlying assumptions. This will remove communication hurdles internally and externally, thus promoting progress and impact.
3. To provide interactive interfaces for the interaction of external stakeholders with findings of the MSM consortium: “Data Exploratorium” and “Data Kiosk”. Mid-term, those interfaces will also include battery modelling, design, and planning tools. This will serve the wider research community and industry.
As this position is inherently interdisciplinary, the optimal candidate will hold a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or a related discipline. We would welcome experience with large/complex datasets and a basic understanding of data standards and/or managing data across organisations. That could also include experience with data storage and sharing platforms (Hadoop, BigChainDB, streaming analytics etc.), web-based interactive visuali-sation applications (D3, D3plus, plotly, bokeh, superset, or similar), or industry-level design tools.
The ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment and liaise with partners across multiple institutions is essential to this post.
Surrounded by three national parks and the Irish Sea, Lancaster is a great place to work and live. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address equality issues in higher education and research.
The appointment will be for a period of 2 years, with good chances for extension.
