Lancaster University is one of the UK’s top Universities, the 2018 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide’s University of the year, ranked in the top 10 across all major UK league tables and in the top 150 internationally in the QS world rankings.

A new role of Head of Research Quality and Policy has been created in the Division of Research and Enterprise Services as a result of significant growth in our research activities over recent years. As Head of Research Quality and Policy, you will be part of the Division’s senior leadership; working together to further develop and optimise an outstanding research support service that consistently meets the University’s needs and supports the delivery of the overall University strategy.

You will work with key decision makers in the University, notably the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Associate Director of Research Services, and Faculty Associate Deans for Research, in the further implementation of our Research Strategy.

The quality, reach and significance of research produced in Lancaster University's vibrant research environment is world leading. Our research is truly international in focus, with research partnerships in over 60 countries across the world. We advance knowledge and understanding across a variety of disciplines and make major contributions in arts and social sciences; management; health and medicine; and science and technology; and tackle key grand challenges through our trans-disciplinary research institutes, including: data science; materials; social futures; and cyber security; and through major new projects such as our Health Innovation Campus.

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) confirmed Lancaster as a world-leading research university. We were the only one of the eight research-intensive universities in across the North of England to increase our funding as a result of REF2014, in which 83% of our research was ranked as either internationally significant or world leading. In 2017/18 we saw a record year for research at Lancaster with over £55m of new awards, together with the University now measured first nationally for Research Council UK success rates.

This post provides an exciting opportunity for you to play a leading role in developing and operationalising the University’s strategic objectives for the Research Excellence Framework in order to secure the best possible REF submission for Lancaster. You will lead and manage the University’s REF impact, ethics, clinical governance and research contracts teams to sector-leading standards, developing and delivering sustained high-quality, user-focused services.

This all presents an exciting and unique opportunity for an experienced research support/development professional whom wants to further progress their career within a progressive research and enterprise support function, situated within a leading, ambitious and prosperous organisation, which really values its people.
