The photosynthesis team at the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) is researching how to improve carbon assimilation to increase crop yields, while minimising the use of resources. Our research focuses on understanding genetic variation in photosynthetic efficiency and regulation in response to the environment.

We are seeking an enthusiastic senior post-doctoral researcher with expertise in bioinformatics to join the photosynthesis team at Lancaster as part of the project RIPE: Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency for Sustainable Increases in Crop Yield. The aim of the research at LEC is to exploit genetic diversity in cowpea and soybean to improve crop photosynthetic efficiency, both through informing breeding of improved cultivars and using genome editing approaches.

For this post you will have a background in bioinformatics, relevant experience of working with genomics and transcriptomics data, and a genuine interest in contributing to improve the efficiency of crop production for future food security. Experience of working with crop species, and a good understanding of photosynthesis and crop improvement are also desirable. A proactive and enthusiastic approach and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for the collaborative nature of the research in this diverse team. You will be expected to lead research publications in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals. Attention to detail and excellent English writing skills are essential to meet the exciting and challenging goals of the project.

You will have access to state-of-the-art resources, including the Lancaster High End Computing (HEC) Cluster, and be part of a highly collaborative and supportive working environment. Professional development opportunities and training courses to broaden your expertise and skills will be encouraged and are covered by the project. By way of example, this could include (but will not be limited to) attending the Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory course in Advanced Sequencing Technologies & Applications 2019.

Lancaster is an ‘English Heritage City’ at the doorstep of the Lake District.

This is a three year fixed term appointment.
