Research Associate for Nuclear Innovation Programme Processing Project

Engineering
Salary:   £28,331 to £32,817
Closing Date:   Sunday 20 October 2019
Reference:  A2817

Applications are invited for two post-doctoral research associate positions funded by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Situated within the Engineering Department at Lancaster University, and working closely with the UK National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), the research associates will work on the projects within the Recycle & Waste Management Programme of the National Nuclear Innovation Programme.

Part of a collaborative programme involving 4 UK partner universities and led by NNL, the projects will involve the development of new routes for the recycle of spent nuclear fuel that offer substantial improvements in proliferation resistance, minimising wastes generated and environmental impacts at source, economics (relative to the current PUREX process) and process safety. In particular, the research associates will work on

  1. The development of new and novel routes for the dissolution of spent nuclear fuel at so-called “head end”, the first stage of any spent fuel recycle process; and

  2. The conversion of the resultant separated actinide process streams into actinide oxide product powders suitable for advanced fuel fabrication.

You will join a research team led by Professor Colin Boxall, studying chemical aspects of nuclear science & engineering. The positions are available to scientists with doctoral experience in chemical / materials science and radiochemistry. Preference will be given to those with experience of working on real actinide-bearing materials.

The positions are available for 18 months in the first instance.

Informal enquiries to Professor Colin Boxall, email: c.boxall@lancaster.ac.uk or Telephone 0781 405 5964. Interviews are scheduled for week commencing 28th October 2019.

The Engineering Department is committed to flexible working on an individual basis, welcomes and embraces diversity, and is committed to the Athena SWAN principles.
