Research Associate in Mobile Robot Navigation and Control

We wish to appoint a talented and passionate researcher to undertake advanced applied research in the field of robotics navigation and control to design and develop novel algorithms for the next generation of autonomous robotic systems that operates in an unstructured and extreme environment. This is a one year appointment.

This is an exciting research position to collaborate with industrial and academic partners on a multi-disciplinary robotic project in the framework of the EPSRC funded hub, National Centre for Nuclear Robotics.

With a strong background in control theory and/or robotics research, you will investigate design and development of nonlinear control systems for a class of unstable and under-actuated robotics platform. There is a particular focus on nuclear decommissioning applications. This will involve fundamental research and development of new algorithms, in addition to the practical robotics research in the laboratory. You will contribute to the automation and experimental testing of the UAV platform and other robotics facilities available in the department and in collaboration with other project partners.

You should have a PhD in control engineering, computer science, robotics or other equivalent disciplines, and a strong background in mathematics, data analysis and the use of simulations and modelling methods. Familiarity with the robotics and engineering simulation software is a big advantage. You will be willing to engage in internal as well as national and international external collaborations.

You must have excellent skills in interpersonal communications to effectively work in team. You are expected to prepare high quality presentations, reports and journal papers. You will be responsible for specific tasks of the projects, subject to tight deadlines.
