Senior Research Associate in Development of Metal-Organic Framework Sodium-Ion Battery Materials

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate to work in the group of Dr John Griffin in the Department of Chemistry at Lancaster University. You will use a combination of solid-state NMR and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to characterise sodiation mechanisms in metal-organic framework (MOF) anode materials. A key aim of the research will be to understand what structural properties contribute to the capacity and rate performance and to use this knowledge to design materials with improved properties.

You will be required to carry out MOF synthesis, battery assembly and testing, solid-state NMR measurements and DFT calculations. The position is funded by an ISCF Faraday Battery Challenge - Faraday Institution Phase Two project, entitled NEXGENNA. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with other partners from the NEXGENNA consortium, and so the appointee may also be required to travel to carry out work or training with other research groups where necessary.

This full time position is available in the Department of Chemistry at Lancaster University from 1st January 2020. The initial position is available until March 2021, with an expectation that this will extend until September 2023.

You will have a PhD degree (or about to be awarded a PhD) in Chemistry or relevant subject. Expertise in experimental and computational solid-state NMR is highly desirable. They will be expected to work in a highly multidisciplinary collaborative team, and have effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
