A new opportunity exists to work on a NERC-funded project within the Space Weather Instrumentation, Measurement, Modelling and Risk (SWIMMR) programme. The successful candidate will conduct research into the nature of the ionospheric electric field (IEF) that results from time-variable solar wind driving of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The role will involve assessing and comparing a range of IEF models and producing bespoke IEF data sets to be used by SWIMMR consortium partners. It will also involve the development of Python code that will enable the Lancaster IEF model outputs to be made available as a module for incorporation into other Python applications. This is an 18-month post, based in the Space and Planetary Physics (SPP) group in the Department of Physics. Owing to the relatively short duration of the post, and to the ongoing disruption caused by Covid-19, any requirement for remote working on this project will be fully supported.

The Space and Planetary Physics group is a diverse and dynamic research group exploiting ground-based and space missions to study the ionospheres and magnetospheres of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. The Lancaster University Physics Department is holder of Athena SWAN Silver award and JUNO Championship status and is strongly committed to fostering diversity within its community as a source of excellence, cultural?enrichment, and social strength. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our department.
