Lancaster University’s Department of Sociology is seeking to recruit a Senior Research Associate to work with Professor Michaela Benson on the project Rebordering Britain and Britons after Brexit (MIGZEN)

This is a full-time position. You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time is for two years.

You would join the project team that includes PI Professor Nando Sigona (University of Birmingham) and a University of Birmingham-based researcher. We welcome applicants with experience of qualitative research and computer-assisted data analysis (NVivo), who have experience of working in a research team, with knowledge and expertise in critical citizenship and migration studies, and with an interest in the public communication of social science research. Due to the focus of the project, some travel for research purposes within the UK and the EU may be required.

Funded through the ESRC’s Governance After Brexit programme, MIGZEN is organised around a programme of work focussed on the impact of Brexit on migration between the UK and EU at a range of scales: (a) policies and legal structures; (b) flows and routes; (c) migration strategies and settlement experiences. Underpinned by a dynamic understanding of migration as two-way traffic between the UK, the EU and the rest of the world, MIGZEN uniquely considers emigration of British citizens and EU citizens formerly resident in the UK alongside the immigration of EU and non-EU Third Country Nationals and repatriation of British citizens to the UK. It aims to produce new and timely knowledge on the long-term impacts of Brexit on migration flows in and out of the UK, while also intervening in public and political understandings of Britain's migration story and future.

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. The Department of Sociology was ranked 1st in the UK for research intensity in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), with 39% of our research classed as ‘world-leading’ and a further 44% recognised as ‘internationally excellent’. We seek to develop and sustain research that is original, significant and rigorous, while also fostering interdisciplinary, supportive research communities from which this work can grow. The Department plays a key role in interdisciplinary research collaborations at Lancaster with particular research concentrations in science and technology studies, gender and women’s studies, political economy, mobilities, media and cultural studies, political sociology, children and young people, and disability. We are home to a diverse group of interdisciplinary research centres, which bring together staff and students from across the university and across the world through their research and events.

Applicants should submit a 2-page covering letter and CV with their online application.
