Research Associate in Rational Design Synthetic Chemistry and Electrochemistry

This post is part of a research project relating to the indirect electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to hydrocarbon products. It is funded by the European Research Commission as part of a five-year Starting Grant awarded to the PI. The postdoctoral researcher sought in this particular post will be focussed on the design and synthesis of electron donating electrolyte solutions, the design and fabrication of electrochemical flow cell reactors, and the electrochemical evaluation of catalytic materials in conjunction with redox solutions. This project aims to explore the potential of batch generated electron donor solutions to reduce CO2 via a heterogenous catalyst, with a view to developing a process with higher energy density, efficiency, scalability, long-term stability, and low cost compared to traditional electrochemical methods. A key focus will be utilising sustainable and low-cost materials to achieve this goal. 

A PhD in chemistry or related sciences, a good understanding and experience of electrochemistry and capability and confidence in synthetic chemistry is essential, with evidence of experience in targeted design of materials required in the application. Experience in the design and fabrication of flow reactors or batch electrolysers is desirable, as well as proficiency in the use of analytical equipment such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

The role will include the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, the preparation of publications and grant proposals, and other laboratory related administrative roles to support the PI and her group. It is essential that the applicant has experience and confidence in writing research articles and can evidence this in their application.
