We are looking for 2 new software developers to join the Health Innovation Campus digital team within the School of Computing & Communications.  These roles support Lancaster University’s new Health Innovation Campus development (https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/health-innovation/business/).  The programme focuses on innovation in the healthcare industry , supporting Lancashire businesses in the development of digital product and service concepts.

As part of the project team, you will enable innovative use of digital technology in a range of healthcare sectors.   You will contribute ideas and technical skills in the delivery of short digital R & D projects working with small business clients.  The role is not a typical development team position but offers the chance to gain broad experience developing digital prototypes for business clients.

Each project is bespoke, and you will be challenged to discover what healthcare service problems can be tackled using digital technology.  We are not grounded in any particular platform and expect to utilise a mix of technologies and skills to develop new product ideas.  This allows us to experiment with the latest platforms and approaches on behalf of clients. Some examples of recent projects include a Flutter mobile application to track calorie intake, a sensor-based system to monitor vulnerable adults, an AWS Natural Language Processing system to process out-of-hours appointment calls, an AI application to flag inappropriate content in images and an Augmented Reality application for physical therapy.

You will need to demonstrate a range of practical technical skills in software development and programming, user experience and interface design.  We are looking to build a broad technical team to creatively tackle healthcare problems with digital solutions.  No two client projects will be the same so the successful candidate must have the flexibility to adapt and quickly adopt new technical skills and approaches. Good communication skills are essential as is the ability to work with business to assess their requirements.  You will be creative in supporting business to innovate and develop new products and services through the application of the latest digital technology.  The ability to travel to meetings at client company locations throughout the region is essential.

This role is particularly suited to an early career developer looking to gain a range of experience, though we welcome applications from developers at any stage in their career.  You will take part in the full project lifecycle from liaising with client companies through to the design and development of software components and applications.  You will work alongside experienced developers, who are able to provide guidance and support and there is ample opportunity to develop your technical skills and contribute ideas.  The role is based at Lancaster University’s campus, providing opportunities to attend talks and lectures and find out about recent research. As a staff member there are plenty of campus activities available to you.The rural campus location also provides easy access to the Lake District.

For an informal discussion about the role, please get in touch with the team manager, Stewart Kember (kembers@lancaster.ac.uk).

This is a full-time fixed term post until December 2020 and is part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.

The closing date for this job opportunity has now passed, and applications are no longer being accepted for this position
