We are seeking an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher for a new project to develop superconducting electronics using graphene Josephson junctions. Graphene Josephson junctions (G-JJs) offer the opportunity to build superconducting electronics that can be controlled electrostatically, which avoids magnetic fields that can interfere with other superconducting devices, such as quantum sensors or qubits. Until recently, the fabrication of G-JJs has been limited to mechanical exfoliation, which lacks reproducibility and is time-consuming and inefficient. VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland have developed a wafer scale fabrication process for fabricating G-JJs across an entire wafer, up to 200mm with plans to scale up to 300mm.

The SuperICQ consortium is a recently funded EU Pathfinder Open project that aims to develop a host of superconducting electronics using this new process and to integrate these with superconducting qubits. At Lancaster we will be characterising individual junctions, designing and testing parametric amplifiers, characterising tuneable resonators and demonstrating multiplexed qubit readout. As a member of the consortium you will also collaborate with partners at VTT (Finland), Aalto (Finland) and Chalmers (Sweden).

Lancaster is a major player in superconducting quantum devices in the UK and benefits from extensive nanofabrication, cryogenic, and electronics infrastructure. You will work in the Quantum Technology Centre at the Physics Department of Lancaster University and will travel as necessary to liaise with project partners and to attend national and international workshops and conferences.

For information on our research interests:

https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/physics/about-us/people/yuri-pashkin

https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/physics/about-us/people/jonathan-prance

https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/physics/about-us/people/michael-thompson

Funding is available to appoint to this post as soon as you are available. You will join us on an indefinite contract. However, the role remains contingent on external funding, which at this time is for 24 months with a possible extension of a further 12 months.

Lancaster University Physics Department is strongly committed to fostering diversity within its community as a source of excellence, cultural enrichment, and social strength. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our department.

Applicants may find information on Lancaster and the University here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/jobs/life-at-lancaster/

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Michael Thompson (m.thompson@lancaster.ac.uk).

The successful candidates will gain experience of working within an established research team and the opportunity to develop valuable research skills.

Applicants must be:

Current Lancaster University undergraduate students

In the middle years of their first degree studies (normally between years 2 and 3 for students on a 3-year undergraduate programme or equivalent for 4-year undergraduate programmes).

Expected to obtain a first or upper second class UK honours degree.

The opportunity is hosted by the Liverpool and Lancaster Collaboration for public health research (LiLaC, www.lilac-healthequity.org.uk) and funded by the NIHR School for Public Health Research (NIHR SPHR, https://sphr.nihr.ac.uk/). We are looking to recruit two undergraduate students with an interest in a career in public health research.

The internships are offered as a casual work opportunity, on a part-time, flexible basis over the 2026 summer period. Each post is planned as 0.6 FTE (3 days per week) over approximately 8 weeks (exact working pattern to be agreed with the successful candidate and supervisors). The successful students will be based in the Division of Health Research (DHR) at Lancaster University and work on one of two projects described in the further details document. Candidates must indicate a preference for one project during the application process.

Project 1: Trauma-informed, creative research on belonging, safety and first contact (CREATE + Recognised, Not Retold)

This internship is suited to students interested in health inequalities, the wider determinants of health, and participatory/creative qualitative research. You will support work that explores what makes support-service spaces feel safe and welcoming (or not), and how learning from lived experience can be translated into feasible improvements for practice. A distinctive feature of this placement is structured learning in trauma-informed approaches, and involvement in knowledge translation, helping turn findings from creative activities into stakeholder-ready learning (e.g., housing, council, NHS, voluntary sector).

Project 2: Public health systems and health inequalities (Systems project using Qualitative Comparative Analysis)

This internship is suited to students interested in public health systems, policy action on inequalities, and innovative methods. You will work with an experienced team using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to explore how different configurations of system “conditions” (e.g., governance arrangements, stability, policy embedding) relate to action on health inequalities and their social determinants. You will gain experience working with structured qualitative data sources and learning how QCA can be applied in public health research.

Both internships sit within projects led by Dr Rebecca Mead (Lancaster University, Division of Health Research / LiLaC). Day-to-day supervision will be provided by the relevant project supervisor:

Project 1 (CREATE + Recognised, Not Retold): Dr Yessica Mestre, Research Associate.

Project 2 (Systems/QCA project): Dr Zoe Swithenbank, Senior Research Associate.

Dr Mead will provide overall oversight and mentorship across both placements, alongside the wider LiLaC/SPHR team as needed.

The successful applicants will be supported by the project leads and work within a friendly research environment. You will develop skills in research processes and writing for different audiences. You will be expected to complete a short report at the end of the internship plus either a blog or a practice/public-focused briefing (and there may be an opportunity to support dissemination activities).

Our team and the Division of Health Research provide a welcoming research environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and which actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. The Faculty is committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies and has held a Silver Athena SWAN award since 2014 in recognition of its good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.
AI Agent Security & Safety

We are seeking candidates to join our AI security group at Lancaster University, and become part of this rapidly growing research field.

This position focuses on AI Agent Security, and specifically Shadow AI. ShadowAI – the deployment and use of Artificial Intelligence within an organisation without knowledge or approval from security teams – is a major issue within companies, given the rapid uptake of agents within organisations. ShadowAI is often hidden or embedded within software applications, and introduces threats spanning model backdoors, coordinated attacks, AI safety issues, and data leakage. This is particularly problematic given the introduction of ShadowAI at the computing edge to the wider organisation. Current tools and methods proposed across both academia and industry are unable to address this issue.

In this project, you will research how to defend AI agents from cyber attack. This research will provide opportunities resources atypical to a postdoctoral post, including a rapidly growing AI security lab, a large-scale GPU datacenter containing state-of-the-art foundation models, as well as direct collaboration with an award-winning AI security company Mindgard (https://mindgard.ai/), where you will work with industry researchers to tackle real-world problems. This project is a rare opportunity to become among the very few researchers in the world specialising in AI system security – an area that is becoming increasingly sought after in both academia and industry.

You will have a PhD in Computer Science, with expertise within cyber security, Artificial Intelligence, or distributed systems. Direct experience within AI security, Adversarial Machine Learning, or workload anomaly detection would be a bonus. Findings of this research are intended to be rapidly disseminated into industry, thus experience with developing prototypes and good software development skills are desirable.

The Edge AI Hub (https://edgeaihub.co.uk) is a £10M EPSRC project dedicated to systematic understanding of Cyber Disturbances in the context of edge AI. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the research theme by carrying out cutting edge research work in security and privacy of AI applications and processes on the edge. This is a unique opportunity to work with an international team of researchers spanning multiple institutions in academia and industry as part of the flagship UKRI hub in AI.

The School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University was ranked 14th in the UK for research power according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, with 94% of research rated world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). Lancaster University Cybersecurity represents an area of major strategic importance for Lancaster and we have recently announced a £19m programme of investment in Security and Protection Science. Lancaster University is the only institution in the Northwest recognised as an ACE-CSR, ACE-CSE, and offering a double-certified (NCSC and BCS) MSc in Cyber Security.

The School of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (FHASS) is seeking to appoint a full-time Senior Research Associate to join the University’s new interdisciplinary Mental Health Research Group (MHRG) funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR, 2026 - 2031).

The Senior Research Associate will play an essential role within a team of researchers who will deliver a programme of innovative participatory research, focused on the co-design of a peer-led intervention for preventing family breakdown in vulnerable groups with unmet mental health needs. The work will take place in Greater Lancashire and South Cumbria. The proposed programme of research speaks directly to growing concerns about mental health and family breakdown, in a context of high rates of children in public care. The Association of Directors of Children’s Services have identified mental health difficulties as the most common and rising risk factor in children’s social care assessments. While clinical treatment plays an important role in addressing mental health to prevent family breakdown, formal clinical services cannot meet the everyday mental health and wellbeing needs of parents. The proposed programme of research draws on evidence that co-designed peer support, mentoring, and advocacy can fill this gap, by responding to everyday mental distress, creating durable support networks, and often providing a bridge to formal services. The programme of work will include a targeted focus on the Gypsy Roma and Traveller Communities, alongside parents involved with mainstream mental health services.

You will have completed, or be close to completion of, their doctoral studies in a related field. Relevant professional experience is also welcome, given the post will involve extensive external stakeholder engagement. You will need to have a keen interest in participatory research methods, and have strong organisational and interpersonal skills together with a proven ability to establish relationships with service users, statutory services, voluntary organisations, academics and clinicians. You must have robust knowledge of methods of searching and reviewing literature, qualitative data collection, data management and methods of qualitative data analysis. Prior research experience is highly desirable.

Support, development and mentoring in this role will be provided by the Research theme leads, as well as partner organisations. The postholder will be encouraged to develop their own scholarship within the programme of work, and to be an active member of the wider MHRG. If you are a self-directed and committed individual with an interest in child welfare, parenting and mental health research, we welcome your application.

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. It is in the top 1 per cent of universities in the world and highly ranked in each of the UKs major university league tables. Our School of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (FHASS), provides a friendly environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and which actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. The Faculty is committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies. You will also have excellent opportunities to collaborate with colleagues within the Faculty of Health and Medicine (FHM).

You will join Lancaster University on an indefinite contract with a start date of the 1st of July 2026. Although this is an indefinite contract, the role remains contingent on external funding, which is due to come to an end on 30th June 2031. The post is available on a full-time basis, but we are open to discussing flexible working arrangements. The successful applicant will be able to work on a hybrid basis, but will be required to travel across Greater Lancashire and South Cumbria to fulfil their duties.

Applicants wishing to consider the Skilled Worker Route should ensure they meet the points requirement before applying. Further information can be found on the UK Visas and Immigration website.

For further information on the role and to discuss any aspects of the position, please contact:

Professor Karen Broadhurst: Email: k.broadhurst@lancaster.ac.uk Dr Joanna Kostka: Email: j.kostka@lancaster.ac.uk

Lancaster University is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Media to be based at its Leipzig campus in Germany. Situated in one of Germany’s most vibrant and liveable cities, the Leipzig campus offers the same high-quality academic standards and student experience as Lancaster University in the UK, within a strongly international and interdisciplinary teaching and research environment.

This role will play a strategic part in the development of the Media and Communication Studies provision at Lancaster University Leipzig, including active collaboration with the Leipzig-based Media research group and close partnership with Programme Leadership during the ongoing Curriculum Transformation Process. The post-holder is expected to demonstrate flexibility in teaching across an evolving portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and a strong commitment to the long-term academic and institutional development of the Leipzig campus.

The University will undertake a formal Curriculum Transformation Process at the beginning of the 2026/27 academic year. This process will review the current programme portfolio and may result in modules being retained, revised, or replaced. You are therefore expected to demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to contribute to the design and delivery of new or reconfigured modules in line with strategic and academic priorities. You are also invited to actively participate in the transformation of the programme portfolio.

The position foremost supports the undergraduate programme in Business Management and Media and complements the department’s existing strengths in research and teaching. You will be expected to contribute to high-quality research outputs, innovative and practice-focused teaching, and engagement activities that strengthen the interface between media, management, and business education.

Research Profile

Candidates should have a strong foundation in research within Media and Communication Studies, with a primary focus on areas such as Corporate Communication, Public Relations, and Strategic Communication. Complementary or secondary research interests in related fields — such as Popular Media and Culture, Games and Play, Journalism and Visual Communication, Computational Communication, Social Media, Big Data, or Artificial Intelligence in communication — are also welcomed where they support interdisciplinary collaboration, programme development, and the strategic research priorities of Lancaster University Leipzig and the wider Management School.

Teaching Scope

All candidates are expected to contribute to teaching across the Media curriculum, which may include modules such as Social Media and Activism, Games, Play and Media, Journalism and Multimedia Production, Social Media Marketing, and the Independent Dissertation Project, as well as the development of new modules aligned with corporate communication, public relations, and strategic communication. In particular, the post-holder will be expected to design, develop, and deliver the BSc-level module “Viral Media” as part of the undergraduate programme, and to contribute to the ongoing development of this and related modules in line with strategic curriculum priorities and the Curriculum Transformation Process.

German language skills are not a prerequisite for the role, though Lancaster University is seeking applicants with an interest in making a long-term commitment to its campus in Leipzig. Candidates from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Please note this role is a full time, indefinite-duration appointment based in Leipzig, Germany. The contract is with Lancaster University Leipzig under German law.

Ideally, we would like the appointed candidate to start at latest on 1st September 2026. The opportunity is unique as the role is permanent after a 6-months probationary period, and offers the opportunity of being promoted to Associate Professor and Professor in Line with performance. We also support administrative procedures related to settlement in Germany and assistance in finding accommodation, family integration (school registration for children), German training (for you and your partner), and relocation expenses.

For an informal discussion about these roles please contact,

the Head of Department: Dr Jan Schoenfelder ( j.schoenfelder@lancaster.ac.uk)

On submitting their application candidates MUST attach a research statement (maximum 4 pages) together with a cover letter and curriculum vitae in PDF format.
