Post-doctoral Research Associate – Coral Reef Ecology (Horizon Europe funded) Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University.

An exciting opportunity exists for a coral reef scientist or marine community ecologist to contribute to a Horizon Europe funded project: The role of connectivity in safeguarding functioning coastal ecosystems under global change.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic marine scientist to contribute to a project investigating the links between mangroves, seagrasses and coral reefs in the context of seabird nutrient inputs. This is a multi-institutional project, led by University of Bremen. Lancaster University is leading the ecology component focused on the Seychelles, with a particular focus on Aldabra Atoll and the inner islands marine parks. Fieldwork for the project will include long periods in remote locations, working in small teams, and experience of such working will be essential. The project will identify key sites where mangrove to coral reef connectivity can be mapped and investigated, assess species and nutrient connectivity across the seascape, and investigate outcomes for both ecosystem functioning and food security. Patterns of seabird densities in mangrove stands will be used as a study design to investigate the influence of seabird derived nutrient inputs on seascape connectivity. Co-mentoring of a PhD student on the same project will be part of the role. Applicants are encouraged to think through their own ideas about these linkages and how their area of expertise could be applied to this study design. You will work closely with Prof Nick Graham and Dr James Robinson on this project, and collaborate with partners at Seychelles Islands Foundation and Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority, and with other universities in the consortium.

Preferred candidates will have a PhD in marine science, extensive experience of fieldwork in remote settings, and skills in statistical modelling, and writing publications. A proactive and enthusiastic approach and good interpersonal skills are essential.

Lancaster University is a research-intensive university, ranked in the top 15 of UK universities. The Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) is a large and multidisciplinary department, tackling environmental challenges across the natural and social sciences. Within LEC, there is particular strength in high diversity tropical systems, including coral reefs and tropical rainforests. LEC offers a highly collegial and stimulating environment for career development based on departmental values and embedded Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) considerations and actions.
Mental Health Research Group (MHRG)

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. It is in the top 1 per cent of universities in the world and highly ranked in each of the UKs major university league tables. The Division of Health Research (DHR), within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine, is seeking to appoint a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate with experience in data science to join the new Mental Health Research Group (MHRG). The MHRG is a five-year initiative funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

Four initial research themes aim to tackle inequities in access to effective mental health interventions, particularly for those experiencing multiple disadvantages and/or complex mental health issues, who are often excluded from mainstream services.

You will work across the Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health Data Science themes with Professor Jo Knight, Dr Laura Goodwin, Dr Thomas Mason and Dr Anastasia Ushakova to analyse mental health care data sets. There will be opportunity through this role to work with novel and linked routine data. This will likely involve a wide range of research skills including statistical analysis, data visualisation, engagement with service users and stakeholders, research ethics and governance applications, and preparing papers for publication. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex statistical findings appropriately for a range of audiences.

You must have a degree or PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline. Ideally, in addition to strong quantitative research skills, you will have a good understanding of mental health research, particularly involving addiction and/or inequalities. Experience working with NHS data sets, and using programmes such as R, Stata, SQL or Python, would be advantageous.

You will be based in the Spectrum Centre for Mental Health Research at Lancaster University (Health Innovation campus) and associated with the Centre for Health Informatics, Computing and Statistics, and may involve occasional travel within the UK.

The team and the Division of Health Research provide a friendly environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. The Faculty is committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies and has held a Silver Athena SWAN award since 2014 in recognition of its good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

The post is available to start September 2026 and we will consider against the business needs of the project flexible working arrangements including condensed hours, days/hours worked and flexible start and finish times. You will join Lancaster University on an indefinite contract; however, the role remains contingent on external funding, which at this time is due to come to an end on 30th June 2031.

Applicants wishing to consider the Skilled Worker Route should ensure they meet the points requirement before applying. Further information can be found on the UK Visas and Immigration website.

For further information on the role and to discuss any aspects of the position, please contact:

Professor Jo Knight: jo.knight@lancaster.ac.uk or Dr Laura Goodwin: l.goodwin1@lancaster.ac.uk

MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems is seeking a highly motivated and creative Senior Research Associate to work at the intersection of quantum fluid dynamics and machine learning. You will lead research on the following project:

Machine Learning to Improve Sensing in Quantum Gases

This project will investigate how machine learning can be used to design, control, and interpret ultracold-atom devices in ring-trapped Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). Ring traps support persistent currents, vortices, and coherent matter-wave dynamics, making them promising platforms for quantum sensing and atomtronics. We will combine modern data-driven approaches emerging in the machine learning literature with established physical models to optimise trap parameters, control protocols, and readout strategies for acceleration and rotational sensors. The project will sit at the intersection of quantum fluid dynamics and machine learning to help build robust, high-performance quantum technologies.

Key responsibilities

Develop and implement data-driven machine learning methods to design, control, and interpret ring-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate systems for optimised quantum sensing and/or atomtronic applications.

Publish findings in high-impact journals and top-tier machine learning conferences.

Contribute to an open-source codebase to ensure reproducibility and utility for the wider scientific community.

Collaborate with non-academic partners to translate the research into real-world application.

You will work within a vibrant community of quantum modellers and machine learning academics, centred in MARS. There is additional scope to engage in consultancy, teaching, and outreach activities relevant to the research.

This is a full-time, fixed term position until 31st July 2029.
MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems is seeking a highly motivated and creative Senior Research Associate to join our interdisciplinary team at the frontier of computational epidemiology and machine learning. This role focuses on developing next-generation frameworks to predict, understand, and mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.

You will lead research in one/both of the following cutting-edge areas:

Generative Inference and Monte Carlo Optimisation: Developing new generative machine learning approaches, to improve the efficiency of high-dimensional Monte Carlo algorithms for stochastic epidemic models. Research directions may include discrete normalising flows, diffusion-based methods, online reinforcement learning methods, amortized inference. The aim is to solve one of the last remaining barriers to successful disease modelling at scale, delivering faster and more reliable inference, better-calibrated predictive uncertainty, and computational tools for large-scale mechanistic models.

Probabilistic Modelling of Higher-Order Contact Structure: Developing novel machine learning and statistical methodology for latent relational structure in populations, including higher-order, group-based, and temporally evolving interactions. Directions may include probabilistic graph and hypergraph models, generative approaches to large-scale contact networks, learning from partial or aggregate observations, and principled uncertainty quantification. The goal is to build scalable methods for inference and intervention-aware analysis in complex epidemic systems, with applications to targeted intervention design in settings such as schools, workplaces, and hospitality.

Key responsibilities

Develop and implement novel ML architectures and computationally intensive statistical methodology tailored to outbreak datasets.

Collaborate with public health stakeholders and data providers to ensure models are grounded in real-world contact patterns.

Publish findings in high-impact journals (e.g., Nature Communications, Lancet Digital Health) and top-tier ML conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).

Contribute to an open-source codebase to ensure reproducibility and utility for the wider scientific community.

You will work within a vibrant community of infectious disease modellers, centred in MARS, but collaborating with colleagues in Lancaster Medical School. There is additional scope to work within a wider collaboration with the University of St Andrews and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in Global Health, human, animal, and OneHealth epidemiology, as well as engage in consultancy, teaching, and outreach activities relevant to the research.

This is a full-time, fixed term position until 31st July 2029. AEWE can cause elevated air temperature and snowfall - both important controls on firn depth and density - and they have global implications through detrimental impacts on ice shelf stability and sea-ice cover. Improved projections of how AEWE, their drivers and their impacts may change under a warming climate is therefore crucial to understanding future ice loss and global sea level rise. In this project we will perform a systematic assessment of the role of AEWE on firn evolution using the community firn model, and perform forward simulations forced by RCM output to examine the role of future extremes on ice shelf viability.
Lancaster University is a UK top 15 university in three major league tables.
MHRG Senior Research Associate

Division of Health Research (Spectrum Centre for Mental Health Research)

Grade 7

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. It is in the top 1 per cent of universities in the world and highly ranked in each of the UKs major university league tables. The Division of Health Research (DHR), within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine, is seeking to appoint an experienced Senior Research Associate to join the new Mental Health Research Group (MHRG). The MHRG is a five-year initiative funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), who have recently awarded Lancaster University almost £11 million to conduct world-class mental health research in the North West region.

More than 13,000 people in Lancashire and South Cumbria have been diagnosed with a severe mental illness, while Blackpool has the highest rate of deaths linked to addiction and suicide in England. In conjunction with partners at the University of Manchester and King’s College London, the group will identify local needs and priorities for mental health research and work alongside residents to develop a more proactive, preventative model of care. Four initial research themes aim to tackle inequities in access to effective mental health interventions, particularly for those experiencing multiple disadvantages and/or complex mental health issues, who are often excluded from mainstream services. The voices of diverse individuals with lived experience are central to all aspects of the research programme.

You will work alongside Dr Jasper Palmier-Claus, Professor Steven Jones and Dr Euan Lawson to lead and deliver a randomised control trial for enabling physical health appointments in people with severe mental health difficulties. This role will involve measuring the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the intervention, as well as carrying out a process evaluation to better understand how and why the intervention works, for whom, and in what contexts. You will have a strong background in mental health research and a PhD in a related discipline (or equivalent experience). Knowledge of clinical trial methodology and qualitative approaches, plus an understanding of the ethical and governance processes associated with intervention studies, would be advantageous. You will be expected to contribute to the development of future competitive funding applications to ensure sustainability in mental health research; previous experience is desirable.

The post will be based in the Spectrum Centre for Mental Health Research at Lancaster University (Health Innovation campus) and will involve some travel within the UK.

Our team and the Division of Health Research offer a friendly environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. The Faculty is committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies and has held a Silver Athena SWAN award since 2014 in recognition of its good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

The post is available to start July 2026 and we will consider against the business needs of the project flexible working arrangements including condensed hours, days/hours worked and flexible start and finish times.

Dr Jasper Palmier-Claus email: j.palmier-claus@lancaster.ac.uk or Professor Steven Jones email: s.jones7@lancaster.ac.uk
