You will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in late medieval and/or early modern history, and we particularly encourage applications from candidates able to teach Tudor history. Teaching will involve contributions to team taught modules, co-convening subject-specific and skills-based modules, as well as convening more specialised research-focussed modules. In addition, you will make a more general contribution to History teaching programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, for example by supervising dissertations and PhD theses. You may be expected to assume responsibility for various administrative tasks and will be expected to play a full role as a member of the History community at Lancaster.

About you

You will be expected to have completed their PhD and should have experience of undergraduate teaching and, ideally, of postgraduate teaching as well. You should have a strong track record of high-quality publications relative to their career stage and a coherent five-year plan of research activity that will produce further high-quality outputs suitable for return to the next REF or any future REF-type exercise.

You will also be expected to show a willingness to develop research projects with the potential to attract funding from bodies such as the British Academy, AHRC, ERC, and ESRC. A strategy for engaging with external stakeholders in ways that will lead to research impact is also desirable.

The School of Global Affairs at Lancaster University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Modern British History, c.1800-2000 (Teaching and Scholarship). This is a 1.0 FTE post for 12 months starting on 1 August 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, providing cover for a colleague on a Koch History Centre Senior Fellowship.

You will be asked to contribute to teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate modules such as ‘Modern Worlds’, ‘Handling Historical Evidence’, ‘Modern Britain’, ‘Advertising and Consumerism in Britain, 1853-1960’, and ‘Modernity and Mass Society’.
