Lancaster Environment Centre
Salary:   £35,845 to £49,553
Closing Date:   Sunday 19 January 2020
Interview Date:   Monday 17 February 2020

We seek a lecturer to work within the new Centre of Excellence in Environmental Data Science (CEEDS), a joint venture between Lancaster University and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). CEEDS was established with investment from the two institutions including a series of senior staff appointments who will set the agenda for the Centre of Excellence.

To further grow CEEDS we are looking to appoint a lecturer with experience in remote sensing object-based image analysis and deep learning, particularly where this involves data integration across spatial scales (i.e., the integration of data with different spatial resolutions and at different times). We are particularly interested in the integration of widely available remote sensing datasets with existing CEH “ground data” to innovate new products. Application areas of interest must include land cover change monitoring, long-term environmental monitoring, and agriculture.

We are seeking to recruit an individual with leadership potential, and with a demonstrable capability to produce research outputs that are of the highest international scientific quality, to perform research that has highly significant real-world impact and to successfully acquire external funding to support a substantive programme of research. You will work with other members of CEEDS with a collaborative approach to tackle methodological challenges in answering key environmental questions. For more information on the partner organisations in CEEDS please see the further particulars and websites for LEC and CEH

LEC offers a highly inclusive and stimulating environment for career development. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Professor Peter Atkinson (tel. 01524 595203, or the Deputy Director of UKCEH, Professor Alan Jenkins (tel. 01491 692232,
